“It is not about the Best Design, it is about the Right Design”.

Evan Clabots  has played a leadership role in many different parts of the industry. Because of his diverse background, he is able to connect the dots between various areas of expertise. He works with the belief, “It is not about the best Best Design; it is about the Right Design.” A design that meets the business’s needs – including production techniques, scale and cost, shipping and storage, storytelling, and brand messaging – will provide what both company and customer want. This will result in a product that is packaged, priced, and presented in a way that the customer understands the value it adds to their life. The “Right Product” occurs at the nexus between business, production, and marketing. His work has won the Red Dot Award and the Good Design Award.

2015 – 2017

Clabots co-founded OTHR with Joe Doucet and Dean Simmone. As Chief Design Officer, Clabots works with the world’s top designers to help them locally manufacture products using emerging techniques. Each product is individually produced and numbered based on customer demand, which eliminates the need for inventory. Clabots also continues to teach, and speak at design conferences around the country.

2014 – 2015

Clabots returned to independent design consulting, working with companies to fulfill their Art Direction, Product Design, Furniture Design and Interior Design needs. His recent clients include Sonneman, Heartwork and Maker Anonymous. In 2015, Clabots also joined Pratt as an Adjunct Professor, teaching in the Industrial Design department.

2013 – 2014

Clabots joined as SVP of Design. He built their in-house design team, creating its structure and hiring all designers and staff. Over the course of a year and a half, Clabots and his team brought to market hundreds of SKUs, ranging from furniture to lighting and home textiles. He set the creative direction for multiple seasons and worked directly with factories in Asia and Eastern Europe to see them executed. Clabots left his role at in 2014 during the company’s pivot to Europe; however, he continued to collaborate on furniture designs with Fab’s European incarnation, Hem (formerly One Nordic). These designs continued to launch through 2015.

2010 – 2013

Clabots opened his own design studio, Nonlinear. His studio designed products for industry leaders such as All-Clad, and produced products such as the Slip Watch, which was sold in the MoMA store. During that time, Clabots also launched Amplifiear, a tech-accessories company that produced a sound amplification device for the iPad2. Amplifiear was Kickstarter funded and sold tens of thousands of units over the 2-year life span of the iPad2.

2004 – 2010

Clabots cut his teeth in the New York design world as Lead Designer at the boutique design studio, Dror, where he lead all of the studio’s product and interior design. Here he developed products for companies including Alessi, Cappellini, Target and Tumi. He also led the design of commercial interiors for companies such as Levi’s Footwear and Creative Recreation. His work at Dror has won the Red Dot Award, the Good Design Award and been selected for Metropolitan Museum of Art Permanent Collection.

2000 – 2004

Clabots owes much of his success to his education at RISD, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design. While at RISD, Clabots studied abroad in Finland under famed designer Ilkka Suppanen. Before graduating, Clabots had already been granted a design award by industry-leader Swingline and had a product selected for production by IKEA.
